Gender prediction using a stethoscope!

--> Predict gender using Stethoscope, by just listening foetal Heart sound.

The three ayurvedic sages, Charaka, Sushrutha & Vagbhata have dealt with the Subject Obstetrics in the sharira sthana of their respective treatises; Charaka Samhita, Sushrutha Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya. They have given some very useful hints in predicting the sex of the offspring by observing the characteristics of the pregnant woman and also prescribed some hints for being followed to get the baby of the required sex.

My article published in "National Medical Journal" magazine in 1967.
a). Characteristics of the pregnant lady who is bearing a male baby: - Her right breast is more enlarges than the left and milk appears first in her right breast. She uses her right hand first while attempting to sit, getting up or doing work. She talks about males, male issues and also dreams about them. The position of the foetus will be high in the right side of the abdomen. She will usually be active have a good appetite and loses the charm of the face during labour.

b). Characteristics of a pregnant lady bearing a female baby: Her left breast is more enlarged than the right. She has good appetite but is lazy. The foetus will be high up in the left side of the abdomen. She feels pleasure in listening to music, seeing dance performances and in sexual enjoyment. She is also interested in good perfumes and flower.

c). When both these signs as in (a) and (b) are intermingles, one could anticipate the child to be a eunuch (Napumsaka; A man who has been castrated and is incapable of reproduction).

d). In case of twins , both the sides of the abdomen appear enlarged equally and there will be a vertical furrow in the middle of the abdomen.

Its is said that if the husband and wife are healthy intercourse on the 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th day from the date of menstruation, they will beget a male child and on the 5th, 7th, 8th and 11th day, the issue will be a female.


It is also mentioned that if a pregnant lady aspires of eatables and other articles which are usually expresses in masculine gender she gives birth to a male child and if she desires things expresses in feminine gender, she gives birth to a female child.


These observations should be verified by research practitioners, especially at maternity clinics and nursing homes, where they have facilities for keeping records of cases treats or examines, before ignoring them as mere superstition.


It is further stated that by instilling into the right nostril of the pregnant woman, between 6th and 8th week of pregnancy 3-4 drops of the juice of Lakshmana, Vatshunga, Sahadeva or Vishvadeva, she will beget a male child.


An observant physician even general practitioner could observe the special movements which are attributed to the pregnant ladies and the sex may be predicted and verified in due course.


In the view of the fact that the Ancient seers have mentioned that the position of the foetus in the womb varies according to its sex, i.e., more towards right in the case of male and more towards left in the case of female, (*) the present author, pondering on the point and its possible effect on the pressure it exerts on the mother's heart in the case of female baby and also the possible effect on the foetal heart sounds, gave special attention to the subject. On the basis of foetal heart sounds (loud in the case of females) has been able to predict sex successfully in about 88% of the cases which he has recorded.

I’m herewith enclosing a list of patients who were followed as per your article. Cases observed as per wide article forecasting sex in NMJ (NATIONAL MEDICAL JOURNAL). Up to ascertain the sex of the foetus during the anti natal period on the basis of the character of foetal heart sounds most of the cases found to tally with the findings during the anti natal checkups and the sex of the fetus predicted at full term on the basis of the intensity of foetal heart sounds was found to be correct after delivery. Only in two cases out of 14 predictions proved to be wrong in about 86% of the cases prediction was correct. I shall follow-up some more cases and send you the report. The cases followed up so far have been tabulated and the list is enclosed
